The residency is a space for artistic research and creation for performing arts, media, sound and bio art, analogue art practices, film and video. It is also a project to transform, combining imagination to available natural materials, a 150-year-old hand built natural stone house into a continuously evolving, ecologically sustainable work and living space.

We facilitate international artists and researchers to work, research, collaborate and create interventions, together with the local community and institutions. We aim to create new forms of inclusive and sustainable culture of exploring art practices and inspire critical thinking and research, which evolves and produces new types of knowledge.

What / who?

Armas Residency’s artistic director is Sakari Laurila. The residency is administered by Armas Creative. It brings together a collective of researchers, performing artists, filmmakers and media artists.

The platform aims for critique and understanding of our fossil post-modern consumer society by theoretically and practically analysing the systems and dependencies we live in and creating alternative realities, combining research and art practices.

This is done in two interconnected ways (a) material relations: exploring the natural world, our relations to materials and life sustaining processes, as well as (b) ideology: a critique of the conscious and subconscious realms of our thinking. This process aims at imagining new ways of relating to work, care, independence, sustainability, politics and contemporary art.
